Christopher McCandless: The sea's only gifts are harsh blows, and occasionally the chance to feel strong. Now I don't know much about the sea, but I do know that that's the way it is here. And I also know how important it is in life not necessarily to be strong but to feel strong. To measure yourself at least once. To find yourself at least once in the most ancient of human conditions. Facing the blind death stone alone, with nothing to help you but your hands and your own head.

O Jardim das «Delícias» (3) - MAMMA MIA! (2008)

Com uma (ainda e de que maneira!) surpreendente Meryl Streep à frente de um elenco de luxo, este filme de Phyllida Lloyd é uma verdadeira viagem de sonho. Divertido, muito divertido, e hilariante, irradia vida ao ritmo contagiante dos ABBA. Mamma Mia! é puro cinema de entretenimento, tão despretensioso quanto leve e saudável. Sem dores de cabeça.

Simply... have fun!

Principais Actores: Keira Knightley, James McAvoy, Saoirse Ronan, Romola Garai, Vanessa Redgrave, Brenda Blethyn

Crítica: Um filme delicado: com um delicado argumento, uma delicada banda sonora, uma delicada encenação e um delicado cuidado e bom gosto. Joe Wright é o poeta da subtileza. Uma mão, um gesto, um olhar. Simples, suave, sublime. Magnífica adaptação da obra de Ian McEwan, um todo lúgubre, harmonioso na recriação histórica e um verdadeiro portento na representação: Keira Knightley, James MacAvoy, Saoirse Ronan. Por vezes, os poetas da subtileza esvoaçam ainda para o éter da arte... A retirada na praia de Dunquerque é deslumbrantemente perfeita. Que cena. Que feito.

But so passionate was their singing that they did not notice, nor did they stop as the rain began to fall, and when their voices rose for the final bars of the duet a great bolt of lighting came out of the sky and struck my father so that he lit up like a torch. And at the same moment my father was struck dead my mother was struck dumb! She never spoke another word.

O ORFANATO (2007)

Principais Actores: Belén Rueda, Fernando Cayo, Roger Príncep, Mabel Rivera, Montserrat Carulla, Geraldine Chaplin

Crítica: O Orfanato vive, é certo, na sombra de Os Outros. Porém, revitaliza-se (a si e a um género) sobre um cunho próprio e sobre um virtuosismo diferente. A realização, num exercício subtilmente estimulante, eleva a um estatuto superior o sensível argumento de Sergio G. Sánchez. O Orfanato vive do mistério, dos ruídos, da sugestão... Em última análise e para além de uma obra de terror sublime, revela-se como um drama tocante e profundo, protagonizado em primeira instância pela força magistral de Belén Rueda. Que desempenho brilhante. Suportado ainda por uma excelente banda sonora e por um cuidado técnico inegável, eis um filme surpreendente... a ver e rever.

Dois mundos, duas realidades, duas fantasias, esta é a essência de The Fall. O cineasta traz-nos uma história simples, onde um homem está hospitalizado por causa duma tentativa de suicídio e uma menina de 5 anos revê na sua figura a posição paternal que outrora teve e futuramente deseja. A sua conduta para com aquele indivíduo faz com que este se sinta de novo útil e, com o desejo da morte ainda bem presente em si, se aproveite desta criança que deseja insistentemente saber o fim duma história que este lhe vai contando para tentar de novo o suicídio. O real e o imaginário misturam-se nessa história e a dada altura os personagens e o destino destes desenvolve-se conforme a acção real.
Uma história, um conto, a realidade, a ficção, tudo se vai misturar nesta obra de Tarsem Singh e transportar-nos para um mundo mágico, imaginário e heróico. Não há muito para falar sobre esta obra, tem de ser obrigatoriamente vista pois não há palavras que a descrevam. Singh cria uma fábula mágica para nos falar de coragem, de amizade, de ilusão, de depressão, da morte, da ingenuidade infantil e de fantasia.

The Fall é um filme belo e fascinante que nos deixa a reflectir na nossa condição humana como resultado das acções realizados pelo Homem enquanto indivíduo numa sociedade recriminadora e sufocadora, ou seja, somos aquilo que fazemos de nós, somos nós que construímos o nosso destino e por muitas vicissitudes que nos sucedam, seja de que natureza for, é o Homem que tem (ou não) força psicológica para aguentar (ou não) e ultrapassar ou desistir dessas adversidades que o invadem.
Segundo filme de Tarsem Singh, que vem numa estética visual semelhante à sua primeira obra, The Cell, e que promete deixar a sua marca (ainda mais) no cinema.
Pena não ter ainda saído em DVD por cá em terras lusitanas.

THE FALL, segundo João Bizarro

The Fall é um filme de uma beleza invulgar, quer a nível de imagem, quer a nível da história.
No inicio dos anos 20, numa altura que o cinema dava os primeiros passos, Alexandria e Roy são pacientes num hospital de Los Angeles. Ambos estão hospitalizados devido a uma queda. Roy é duplo de cinema, Alexandria, uma menina de 5 anos é filha de imigrantes que trabalham na apanha de laranja. Os dois conhecem-se e Roy começa a contar histórias a Alexandria, entre elas uma aventura épica de cinco heróis que juntam forças para derrubar um tirano. A fértil imaginação de Alexandria e o facto de Roy colocar personagens reais na história com o intuito de cativar a atenção da menina, faz com que esta por vezes confunda ficção com realidade e nós somos arrastados para estes dois mundos e damos por nós a ter as mesmas sensações que Alexandria tem quando por exemplo Roy faz uma das diversas interrupções da história ou quando é contra o desenrolar da mesma questionando várias vezes Roy sobre o porquê de certos acontecimentos.

Com o desenrolar destes encontros, Alexandria vai começar a ver em Roy a figura paternal que perdeu e Roy que foi deixado pela namorada devido à sua paralisia, vê na menina alguém que gosta dele como ele é.
O realizador Tarsem Singh (que tinha realizado o esquisito A Cela) transporta-nos pelos 4 cantos do mundo, com a história de Roy e a imaginação de Alexandria, no meio de paisagens magnificas e paradisíacas cheias de vida e cor. The Fall é uma experiência fascinante que merece uma (ou mais) visualização. Um filme sobre os primórdios do cinema, sobre aquilo que sentimos quando estamos a ler um livro ou a ver um filme.
